We believe that diversity refers to the wide array of differences that exist among people; these include biological, personal/cultural and organizational differences.  Diversity is the noun to describe these differences.  Even though your organization may need more representation in certain areas, you already have a diverse organization.  Inclusion is the “verb” that refers to the proactive behaviors that are necessary to reduce the barriers often caused by these differences.  Cultural Competencies refer to the skills that are required to create effective relationships and leverage differences.  If these differences are understood, accepted, and managed effectively, the power of diversity will be experienced in terms of high employee engagement and measurable bottom line results.

One of the inherent challenges of diversity is to understand someone else’s reality that is different from one’s own.  Similarly, the “paradox” of diversity is that differences won’t be truly valued until they are experienced as adding value.  However, it is very difficult to “add” value when one doesn’t “feel” valued!
